The Spanish Council of Ministers have approved a royal decree granting the Collar of the Order of Isabella the Catholic to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, prior to his visit to Spain, as a gesture of honoring his visit.
Qatar is Spain’s fifth supplier of liquified natural gas, and amid current political conflict between Spain and Algeria, and the war in Ukraine, it is expected that this issue will be a central topic of discussion upon the Emir’s visit.
Both countries have expressed the possibility that new agreements may be reached during the Emir’s visit. Although none have been confirmed yet.
This is the first visit of the Emir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani to Spain, since he acceded to the throne in 2013. The two countries have maintained diplomatic relations since 1972. Qatar Airways has been continually increasing its investment in Spain over the last years, and Spain has also had moderate but steady investment in Qatar. The Emir's visit is seen as an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations.
