Madrid, 19 September 2022 - The AstraZeneca Foundation has appointed two new members to its Board of Trustees: Dr. Rosario García Campelo, Head of the Department of the University Hospital Complex of A Coruña (CHUAC), member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Lung Cancer Group (GECP) and member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), and Dr. Juan Manuel Corchado Rodríguez, Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Salamanca.

Thus, with Dr. García Campelo and Dr. Corchado the board of trustees of the AstraZeneca Foundation is complete. It is made up of ten professionals from different specialties who share the conviction that supporting scientific talent and innovation in clinical research is the best path towards protecting and improving the patients' health.

The AstraZeneca Foundation focuses on promoting science and research in Spain through public-private collaboration to foster scientific talent and to improve people's quality of life and well-being. "In this regard, it is an honour to have Dr. García Campelo and Dr. Corchado among our trustees to continue sharing our knowledge at the service of young people, patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, public entities and society with the aim of promoting scientific talent and humanising healthcare," says Rick Suárez, President of the AstraZeneca Foundation and AstraZeneca Spain.

According to Dr. García Campelo, "Science is a key transforming agent of society, so I am looking forward to the challenge of joining the AstraZeneca Foundation and contributing to its mission to promote scientific talent". Dr Corchado adds that "supporting scientific talent and innovation in clinical research is the best path towards protecting and improving the health of patients. In this regard, it is an honour for me to be part of this team of people who firmly believe in science".

About the new trustees

Dr. Rosario García Campelo studied Medicine at the USC and completed her training in Medical Oncology at the CHUC. After graduating, she completed her research stay at the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, in the Thoracic Tumour Unit of the Moffit Cancer Center (Tampa, Florida). She is currently Head of the Medical Oncology Service at the University Hospital of A Coruña, and Head of the Oncology Research Group at INIBIC (Institute of Biomedical Research of A Coruña). Her main areas of interest in clinical and translational research are thoracic tumours, in particular, the search for and validation of biomarkers, immunotherapy and new therapies in lung cancer, with active participation in numerous phase I-III studies. Member of the current Board of Directors of SEOM, of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Lung Cancer Group and of the scientific committee of ICAPEM (Association for the Investigation of Lung Cancer in Women).

Dr. Juan Manuel Corchado Rodríguez is Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Salamanca.

He has been Vice-Rector for Research from 2013 to 2017 and Director of the Science Park of the University of Salamanca. He had been elected twice as Dean of the Faculty of Science and holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Salamanca and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of the West of Scotland. He directs the recognised research group BISITE (Bioinformatics, Intelligent Systems and Educational Technology), which was established in 2000.

Director of the IOT Digital Innovation Hub and President of the AIR Institute, J.M. Corchado is also Visiting Professor at the Osaka Institute of Technology since January 2015, Visiting Professor at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan and has been Visiting Professor at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Member of the Advisory Group on Online Terrorist Propaganda of the European Counter Terrorism Centre (EUROPOL).
