The State of Qatar participated in the 19th session of the Science and Technology in Society Forum, which is held annually in the Japanese city of Kyoto, during the period October 1- 4, 2022

The State of Qatar's delegation to this forum is led by Her Excellency Ms. Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, Minister of Education and Higher Education, and includes officials from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.

The Science and Technology in Society Forum in Kyoto aims to improve cooperation among countries in the fields of research, technology, science, and innovation, as well as to discuss mechanisms for technology transfer and the role of science, technology, and innovation in achieving sustainable development goals.

Her Excellency Ms. Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, Minister of Education and Higher Education, attended a ministerial round table on the sidelines of the forum, which was attended by many ministers concerned with education, higher education, science, and technology.

Her Excellency reaffirmed the State of Qatar's commitment to investing in science, technology, and innovation, as well as the country's desire for international cooperation in this field to meet the challenges and risks that our world faces today, including climate change, Covid 19 and other crises the world is going through. She also noted the country's efforts and achievements in the field of financing scientific research and innovation at the national and regional levels, as well as the capabilities offered by the state to attract researchers and experts, and the effort made on developing young people's scientific capabilities and talents. 

Her Excellency revealed that since the Research Fund's inception more than 16 years ago, more than $1.4 billion has been invested in financing over 4,700 research projects and research partnerships with 54 different countries around the world.

Her Excellency also shed light on the pioneering role played by Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council, which was established in 2018. The Council has set a strategy for research, development and innovation for a period of 10 years, until 2030 as a fundamental pillar in building our knowledge-based economy, aiming to make Qatar a regional center for research and innovation. It focused on 5 priority fields: energy, health, resource sustainability, society, and digital technology.

Her Excellency the Minister also met with Qatari students studying at Japanese universities, briefed them on their academic conditions, and listened to their opinions, suggestions, and needs. She encouraged them to work hard and persevere in their studies in order to obtain the highest scientific certificates that will allow them to serve their country, especially since Qatar is in desperate need of all of its children in all scientific disciplines.
